Disable User Account Control (UAC) the Easy Way on Windows Vista

Note: Disabling UAC will lead to a less secure system, so be warned.

Open up Control Panel, and type in user account into the search box.

You’ll see the link for “Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off”. Click it.

Uncheck the box, and reboot your computer. You should be done with obnoxious prompts!

Hide and Secure a Folder (For Real) in Windows-lifehacker.com

January 30, 2008 Leave a comment

Featured Windows Download

Windows only:
My Lockbox isn’t a full-featured encryption solution like TrueCrypt, but it is an easy and free way to hide a folder from all but the most technically savvy (and extremely prying) eyes. Install the program, choose a folder you want to hide (or let it create a “My Lockbox” in your My Documents folder) and then run the program to unlock and add files to it. Shutting down the program or even booting into safe mode won’t reveal your folder, unlike many other “hiding” utilities, and even looking at folder sizes won’t reveal your data. Somebody with a recovery disk and knowledge that you’re hiding something might breach your data, but for most people’s needs, My Lockbox gets the (secret) job done. My Lockbox is a free download for Windows 2000 and later.

Windows only:PixelCryptor Encrypts Files with an Image

File encryption utility PixelCryptor doesn’t use a textual password to encrypt your files, it uses a digital image. Lock up your PixelCryptor file package like a drum and set an image as the key. The more complex the image, the more secure your encrypted folder. Then, on another PC with PixelCryptor installed (or available on a thumb drive), unlock the folder contents only with the image you used to encrypt it. PixelCryptor isn’t open source (so perhaps not as well-developed or supported), but it looks like a viable alternative to our beloved TrueCrypt. PixelCryptor is freeware for Windows only.

How do I restrict a User’s Logon hours on my Windows XP machine?

January 29, 2008 Leave a comment

Local and domain users can be restricted from logging on to the computer (or to the network) at specific hours or days. You can only restrict when a user can log on to the system. On a stand alone computer (one that is not a part of a domain) you cannot force a user to log off when their hours expire.

Although domain administrators have an option in the Active Directory Users & Computers GUI to limit the user’s logon hours, local administrators do not have that option in the Local Users and Groups console.

In order to do that you’ll need to use the NET USER command.

Some examples would be:

net user danielp /time:S-F,08:00-18:00
net user danielp /time:S-F,8am-6pm
net user danielp /time:M,4am-5pm;T,1pm-3pm;W-F,8:00-17:00
net user danielp /time:all

Open a Command Prompt window.

Enter the appropriate “net user” command for the user(s) you wish to restrict access for.

Note: This command also works in Windows NT 4.0 and W2K.
