A few days ago, I posted about an amazing deal Microsoft was offering for students – Windows 7 Home Premium for $29.99. Upon purchase, you will be required to provide your .edu email address as proof that you are a student at a qualified institution. If you are not from the US, select your localization from the menu in the top right corner. If you do not see Windows 7 listed, click on Additional Products in the sidebar.

Windows 7 Professional $29.99 for students

Unlike the Win741 program, there weren’t any specific details provided as to when this deal would expire. The offer is only available in some countries and prices do vary within the different countries, but are still substantially cheaper than the newsstand price.

Some colleges and universities offer complimentary MSDNAA (Microsoft Developer Network Academic Alliance) accounts to their students, which will allow you to download Windows 7 for free. You can check here to see if your school is enrolled in the MSDNAA program.

Windows 7 Installs: No Optical Drive? No Problem!: ”

‘The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD.’

Once upon a time, Personal Computers has their Operating System installed through floppy disks, that is, when they were not run off the floppy disks themselves. You had your choice of the big 5 1/4′ floppies and the more cutting edge 3.5′ floppies. As time went on, the number of floppies you needed increased until you were swapping a stack of 20-30 floppy discs over the course of a few hours! Things are much better now with CDs and DVDs, except lots of PCs are coming without them. So how do you install or upgrade them? With Microsoft’s handy, dandy, super-excellent Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool! Well, it won’t change the world, but it will take the ISO image of a Windows 7 install disc and turn it into a bootable image you can put on a USB flash drive. Handy if you want to upgrade your netbook and don’t have access to an external CD/DVD drive.

Windows 7 ISO to USB/DVD Tool: ”

When you download Windows 7 from MSDN or from Microsoft, it might be in ISO format. You will need to burn the ISO file to a DVD and then start installing. Microsoft has released a new tool which will convert your ISO files to USB or DVD. The Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool allows you to create a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file on a USB flash drive or a DVD. To create a bootable DVD or USB flash drive, download the ISO file and then run the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. Once this is done, you can install Windows 7 directly from the USB flash drive or DVD.

Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool

The copy of the ISO file that the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool creates is bootable. Bootable media allows you to install Windows 7 without having to first run an existing operating system on your machine. If you change the boot order of drives in your computer’s BIOS, you can run the Windows 7 installation directly from your USB flash drive or DVD when you turn on your computer.

To make a copy of your Windows 7 ISO file:

  1. Click the Windows Start button, and click Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool in the All Programs list to open the Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool.
  2. In the Source File box, type the name and path of your Windows 7 ISO file, or click Browse and select the file in the Open dialog box.

  4. If you are copying the file to a USB flash drive, select your USB device in the dropdown list and click Begin copying. If you are copying the file up to a DVD, click Begin burning.

Upgrade to Windows 7 with a Clean Install

October 24, 2009 Leave a comment

Upgrade to Windows 7 with a Clean Install: “

‘I was so hoping to have better news to share, but with all the conflicting reports and my own troubles testing this while on the road, it’s been a messy 24 hours. However, after staying up late last night and working through a few different scenarios, I think I do have a (fairly) simple way to clean install Windows 7 with Upgrade media.’

So you bought Microsoft’s pledge and decided that Windows 7 is the answer to all your life’s problems. Paul Thurrott of the SuperSite for Windows has a treat for you. After much work, he has found a way to use the Windows 7 upgrade media to make a clean install. Traditionally, upgrade media requires that you have an existing copy of Windows on your computer, however, upgrades do not always go smoothly. While Microsoft has improved on this process, lots of techies recommend clean installs, meaning you install the OS on an empty hard drive. With Thurrott’s tip, you can now do an ‘upgrade’ without fear! The only suggestion I can make beyond this is that you keep in mind that this is probably not an officially supported method of upgrading your PC, so have that geek friend on speed dial if you want to try this.

With a rebel Dell, Psystar tries more, more, more

October 23, 2009 Leave a comment

With a rebel Dell, Psystar tries more, more, more:

Psystar, that pesky little thorn in Apple’s side, has released Rebel EFI. According to Psystar, the app, available for $49.99 through the company’s site, ‘allows for the easy installation of multiple operating systems,’ including Mac OS X, on a vanilla PC. Besides bypassing EFI requirements, Rebel EFI can also detect for Mac OS X compatible and incompatible hardware, and automatically download appropriate drivers. Skeptical? No worries: the app is free to try (as an ISO download), with a two hour time limit.

To each their own, and if running Mac OS X on non-Apple specified hardware floats your boat, then you should also be aware of the risks involved. In other words, back up your data if you are attempting such a thing. Second, and more importantly, there’s the issue of licensing: Apple prohibits the installation of Mac OS X on non Apple-branded machines.

Psystar giveth and Psystar must also taketh. One wonders how Psystar will react when people illegally use Rebel EFI, just like Psystar is allegedly misusing Mac OS X, as pirated versions inevitably circulate around the Interwebs.

Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

Microsoft giving away Windows Server 2008: ”

windows_server_2008Well, they’re not just giving it away to everybody. Microsoft is giving away copies of the Server 2008 R2 standard edition as part of their DreamSpark program. DreamSpark is Microsoft’s initiative to give away some of their most powerful tools to students, allowing them to learn how to use the products for free (instead of just pirating a copy off the web).

All you’ll need to do is provide some information that proves your status as a student, and you’ll be able to download an IMG file and install a full working version of Server 2008. Sounds like a pretty good deal. There’s a bunch of other software in the DreamSpark program, so if you’re a student it’s definitely worth your time to check it out. And don’t forget, you can still get a discount on a copy of Windows 7 when it comes out.
